Coping With A Miscarriage Or Stillbirth

After a miscarriage or stillbirth your thoughts, emotions, and life are consumed by grief. It's not realistic for anyone to expect the pain to completely heal, but by working through your emotions you can find the strength to move forward when you're ready.

Compounding your sadness are the hormone levels that can intensify your sadness and send you into a deep depression. While the grief remains, your hormones will once again normalize allowing you to rationalize your feelings which is an important step to healing.

It's very normal to feel a wide range of emotions. While many may be able to relate to the sadness of losing a child, there are other emotions just as strong. You may find yourself filled with anger or even hatred at yourself, your partner and life in general.

Unfortunately, another common emotion women cycle through is guilt. It may be the most difficult emotion to overcome because you may begin to wonder what you could have done differently, or worse, if you did something to cause the miscarriage.

Whatever you're feeling or thinking is a normal process, because every healing process is unique to each person. You don't need to model your behavior with someone else who has experienced a miscarriage.

The most important step is to realize and accept that the miscarriage was not your fault. It may take months or years to accept this, but it's an important step to move forward.

The Five Stages Of Grief

Grief is the result of different life events, but most are overcome by passing through the five stages of grief. These are different emotional states that help you cope and move forward. The five stages are:

  • Denial
  • Anger
  • Bargaining
  • Depression
  • Acceptance

Everyone works through each stage at a different pace. If you are having trouble moving forward you may want to seek comfort from support groups with women who have similar experiences.

Keeping a private journal can also help you sort through, and better understand your emotions after such a devastating loss.
